A
LMOST A YEAR AGO to the day (February 15th), we ran an art auction in sound recordist Nic McGowan's Island Bay Studios to raise funds for the production of
Hook, Line & Sinker
. [VIEW TRAILER] Ben Plumbley of Art + Object generously contributed his services as auctioneer for the night, and we were particularly
honoured to have some of New Zealand’s top veteran artists gift works to Torchlight Film’s latest project Hook, Line and Sinker; so much generosity, kindness and
goodwill from a long list of artists: Robin White, Grahame Sydney, Kobi Bosshard, Warwick Freeman, Barry Cleavin, Billy Apple, Michael Armstrong, Russell Moses,
James Ross, Peter McKay, Philip Trusttum, Richard Killeen, Inge Doesburg, Clive Humphreys and Gretchen Albrecht. We would also like to thank those other
supporters of our film who donated works by artists Ralph Hotere, Denys Watkins, Jane Zusters and Vivian Lynn.

Almost all these artists played a personal role in writer/director Andrea Bosshard’s childhood and teenage years in Akaroa and Dunedin in the 70’s and 80’s. Her
mother Patricia Bosshard-Browne, ran Bosshard Galleries showing contemporary New Zealand art, and her father, Kobi Bosshard, played a prominant role in the
development of modern jewellery in New Zealand. Andrea says, “All my life, I have been so  fortunate to have been surrounded by people who have made things,
who have used their hands, and who despite the obstacles, have persisted in doing what they love and understand what it takes to keep at it."

“How good it is to read that some ‘younger’ persons are prepared to carry on projecting their lineage/heritage
and telling the stories that need to be told. It takes some strain off ‘older’ shoulders. I have posted two small
unframed prints to you... I hope that they equate to some fiscal return for you and the next project. All very
well to have ‘a vision’ and a ‘work ethic’ – but other realities infringe. Good luck.”

“It is about the regenerative power of the landscape I work and live in: its contours, sense of scale and
history. I am concerned with nurturing, protecting and the cycle of growth.”

Land, history and spirituality play a vital role in the work of Otago-based artist Russell Moses (b. 1948), who first
came to prominence in the 1970's for his large pit-fired ceramic sculpture installations. Moses produces series of
work that interweave the narratives of the past and present with his particular iconography. His working methods
cross a range of disciplines including ceramics, sculpture, painting and print-making.

Peter Simpson described Russell's work as "... elegant and sombre meditations on deconstructed Otakou (Otago)
landscapes... always characterised by a formal elegance, innovative use of materials and strong spirituality of
content."David Eggleton writes that Russell's art: "... emerges from the landscape rather than being super-
imposed, like a monument on it.... His is an art which sustains itself on a vocabulary of synonyms for nature:
abstract minimalism crossed with landscape romanticism."

Russell has exhibited locally and internationally since 1980 and his works are held in public collections throughout
New Zealand. Mst recently Dunedin Public Art Gallery held a survey exhibition of his works titled Garden of Light in
2008. Significant works were included in Art in Dunedin in 1984, ANZART in Auckland in 1985, the South Island Arts
         Project Public Practices
exhibition in 1983 and Southern Lights, Edinburgh 1998.

Solander and Avid. We are also grateful to David Strauss of Exhibit A for framing some of the works and to Ben Plumbley of Art and Object, our auctioneer on the
